Hey there, this is Doctor Matthew Wittwer from By Design Chiropractic in Ponderay, Idaho. Thanks for tuning in today.

You know, I get asked all the time, why do I feel so stiff when I first wake up? Why does it take me twenty minutes just to loosen up enough to get moving? And honestly, that’s one of the most common complaints I hear in the office. The good news is, you can do something about it. Today we’re talking about morning mobility, and I’m going to give you a simple routine you can do right when you wake up to start your day feeling better.

So here’s the thing. When you sleep, your body is in one position for six, seven, eight hours. Your muscles get a little tight, your joints get a little stiff, fluids settle in your tissues. It’s totally normal. But if you just roll out of bed and dive straight into your day, you’re asking for trouble. Your body needs a little wake up call.

Think of it like this. You wouldn’t take your car out on a freezing cold morning and immediately floor the gas pedal, right? You let it warm up. Your body works the same way. A few simple movements in the morning can make a massive difference in how you feel all day long.

Let me give you three easy exercises you can start with. And I mean easy. You can do these right in your bedroom before you even brush your teeth.

First one, gentle spinal twists. Lie on your back, bend your knees, keep your feet flat on the bed. Let both knees drop slowly to one side while you turn your head the opposite direction. Hold that for about ten seconds, nice and easy. Then bring everything back to center and go the other way. Do that three or four times on each side. This wakes up your spine, loosens up those deep spinal muscles, and gets things moving.

Second exercise, cat and cow stretches. Get on your hands and knees, either on the bed or on the floor if you prefer. Slowly arch your back up like a cat, tuck your chin, hold for a few seconds. Then drop your belly down, lift your head and tailbone up like a cow. Go back and forth between those two positions five or six times. This mobilizes every segment of your spine and feels amazing first thing in the morning.

Third one, hip circles. Stand up, put your hands on your hips, and make slow circles with your hips. Go clockwise five times, then counterclockwise five times. This loosens up your lower back, your hips, your pelvis. A lot of stiffness lives right in that area, especially if you sit a lot during the day.

That’s it. Three movements. Takes you maybe three to five minutes. But here’s what happens when you do this consistently. You’re lubricating your joints, you’re increasing blood flow, you’re waking up your nervous system. You’re telling your body, hey, we’re about to move today, let’s get ready.

Now, I want to be clear. These exercises aren’t a replacement for chiropractic care if you’re dealing with chronic pain or stiffness. If you wake up every single morning feeling locked up, or if you’ve got pain that doesn’t go away after moving around, that’s your body telling you something needs attention. That’s when you need to come see us.

But for general morning stiffness, these movements are gold. And here’s a bonus tip. Add a little hydration. Drink a glass of water right when you wake up. Your body loses fluids overnight, and dehydration makes stiffness worse. So hydrate, move gently, and give yourself that transition time.

The biggest mistake people make is ignoring their body’s signals. You feel stiff, you push through it, and eventually something gives. A morning mobility routine is like preventive maintenance. You’re staying ahead of the game instead of waiting for a breakdown.

If you try this routine for a week and you’re still feeling stuck, tight, or limited, give us a call at By Design Chiropractic. We’ll take a look at what’s going on, check your alignment, and get you moving the way you should.
