Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Wittwer with By Design Chiropractic here in Ponderay, Idaho, and today we are talking about something that affects a whole lot of people… your desk setup. Whether you’re working from home, sitting in an office, or even doing schoolwork at the kitchen table, the way your workspace is arranged has a direct impact on how your body feels at the end of the day. And honestly, most people never think about it until something starts to hurt.

So let’s change that today.

Here’s the thing. Your body was not designed to sit still for eight hours. We are built to move. But life happens, and a lot of us spend the majority of our day parked in a chair, staring at a screen. When that environment isn’t set up well, your muscles and joints start to compensate. And over time, that compensation turns into pain.

The good news? A few simple adjustments can make a really big difference.

Let’s start with your monitor. You know what I hear a lot in my office? People tell me their neck hurts, and when I ask about their workspace, I find out they’re looking down at a laptop all day. That downward angle puts a tremendous amount of strain on the muscles in the back of your neck. For every inch your head tilts forward, the effective weight on your cervical spine increases significantly. So ideally, your monitor or screen should be at eye level. The top of the screen should be right around your eye line, so you’re looking straight ahead or just very slightly down. If you’re using a laptop, a simple stand and an external keyboard can make a world of difference.

Now let’s talk about your chair and your posture. This one is huge. Your feet should be flat on the floor, your knees at about a ninety degree angle, and your hips should be just slightly higher than your knees. Your lower back needs support. If your chair doesn’t have a good lumbar support, a small rolled towel placed at the curve of your lower back can actually do the job really well. You want to avoid that slouched, rounded posture where your shoulders are curling forward. That position puts strain on your mid back, your neck, your shoulders, all of it.

Here’s what’s interesting. Even a perfect posture becomes a problem if you hold it too long. The best posture is your next posture. What that means is, movement is the key. Try to stand up and move around for a few minutes every thirty to forty five minutes. Set a timer if you need to. Your body will thank you.

Now for some practical things you can start doing today. First, take a look at your screen height and adjust it so you’re not craning your neck up or down. Second, check your chair. Make sure your feet are supported and your lower back isn’t completely unsupported. Third, think about where your keyboard and mouse are. Your elbows should be close to your body, bent at roughly a ninety degree angle, and your wrists should be relatively neutral, not bent up or down. And fourth, commit to taking movement breaks. Even a one minute stretch or a quick walk to the kitchen resets a lot of tension that builds up over time.

So when should you come see us? If you’re already dealing with neck pain, upper back tightness, shoulder tension, headaches, or that nagging low back ache that shows up by mid afternoon… those are all signs that your body is asking for some help. Ergonomic changes are a wonderful first step, but if there’s already dysfunction in your spine or tension built up in the muscles and joints, those adjustments alone might not be enough to resolve it fully. That’s where chiropractic care comes in.

At By Design Chiropractic, we look at the whole picture. We want to help you feel better and understand why you were hurting in the first place, so you can stay well long term.
